Sometimes there is no justice in football - and today was that day.
For the first 10 minutes Poole looked very nervy and Whitley had a couple of good chances. Walker uncharacteristrically completely missed the ball and Chow should have scored but skied it.
Poole gradually settled down. The theme seemed to be to play it to Preston. On 23 minutes this worked as Preston cut in from the left and finished neatly with his right foot.
Poole then took control of the first half and should have had more - one of the best moves being a cross from Preston that Sturgess pushed wide.
In the second half Poole continued to dominate - but could not make it count. Sturgess hit the bar, Cann had a fierce shot well saved. There were other chances as well with a series of corners.
Then came the kuller blow. On 89 minutes the ball was crossed over by Whitley and finished for the equaliser. Polle clearly thought it was off side.
As if that wasn't bad enough, in extra time Poore was given a yellow for handball. From the free kichk Sparks hit a beautiful free kick in to the corner.
Poole were clearly stunned.
However - there is plenty positives to take from this game. On this performance I firmly beleive that Poole were the better side for 2/3 of the game and there is no reason why they can't go to Whitley Bay and win. We like giving sides a 1 goal lead - so here it is.
Great atmosphere for Poole's record crowd at Tatnam - 1653 if I heard Parky correctly.
Many immense performances from Poole today. The boys should be proud of their performance. Tommy just needs to lift them again for next Saturday. As Tommy said before the game, at least it is over 2 legs to even out performance - how cruel would it have been today if it was just the 1 tie.
Wembley can still be achieved.
Believe.

Completely agree, thought it was daylight robbery!
I took along my dad who was visiting and as a complete neutral he couldn't believe how Poole never won the game. As you say many positives to be taken from the game and I imagine WB's left back will be having nightmares about having to face Carl Preston again next weekend.
It's only half-time and the best team is behind (at the moment!)
P.S. After the build up he was getting from the Bay fans I can only assume that Chow wasn't hungry as I thought he was awful.

thx peter, your commentary is right in line with the live broadcast and the only time WB were in control was the last five minutes. in fact motst of the sedond half was just waiting fot Poole to get that elusive second goal.

Good match report Peter, i thought we controlled the game throughout and were clearly the better team. Unlike the last round, the ref was very obvious and to me that means he had a poor game, over fussy and got a lot of decisions wrong (both ways). Unlike the ref we had last round.

We just like doing things the hard way.The Bay got out of jail today,we are crap at defending a lead but very good at scoring goals.
Take that thought into next week boys and we can still prevail.

We played like meningitis today - all over them like a rash!!I think they were shocked. I truly believe that despite being a goal down we can win this, no different to any other game being 1 down!

brilliant game of football today!
i was very suprised to not see tommy at left back , as i thought spetch looked a bit nervy in the first half but he did have a decent game in the end.
poore and sturgess really shone today for me, sturge was lucky not to have a goal though, he hit everything so cleanly and was extremely unlucky.
What did concern me though was the fact that WB had one man over on the far post all first half, and it continued into the second and resulted in their 1st goal.. gilly seemed to be doing so much work but no1 was telling him there was a man over..such a shame as it was a goal that if players picked their men up and communicated then it wouldnt have happened.
anyone else notice a lack of communication within the poole ranks?
i firmly believe that pool are still in with a shout, and didnt deserve the final result.
WHAT A FREE KICK THOUGH!! ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE SEEN AT NON LEAGUE LEVEL..
POOLE TOWN WE BELIEVE IN YOU!!! THE BAY ARE NOT UNBEATABLE BY ANY MEANS!!

I agree that free kick was worthy of winning any game,
Maybe the Bay know how to win,
but so do we i hope?

There with Peterlep, Hampton 10 and pretty much everyone in between. Cracking 2nd goal from WB, and they are great finishers. But after their initial domination they realised that they were playing something to make them wary. Carl's goal was well deserved and had we scored another we really would have got their knickers in a twist. Quite right Taff. We always bounce back, and now we have an incentive to go forward. Which is what we do best.

Gutted, thought we were by far the better team, two late sloppy goals but a win is a win i guess. WB i thought were really disappointing and can only see one winner next week COYD!! What was all the fuss about this Chow?didnt see it meself. Never mind we like to do things the hard way week in week out,i can see an easy 2-0 win next week. Is it the away goal rule do we know???

We were the best team on the day, but the cream rises to the top, and they know how to win. Our Posse have seen WB several times and we so much wanted an on course bookie at 80 mins, we all went for WB to win 2-1, just like they did in the last round !
Have to say we had a guy on the bench for 75 mins who has scored 33 times - WHY ?

Just got back home to the Bay after a long trip back on the bus. What a great day!. Credit to all Poole people for hospitality in the Labour Club, New Inn and ground. See you next week: tie still very much in balance. In the first half your left sided attacker looked great. Bay never stop though and our pressure told in the end.
Oy Keeper! Keeper! I thought your goalkeeper was very good today and met the barracking manfully. Sorry for a couple of idiots; they were quelled quickly though.

Whitley fans had already reported him to the stewards and the club. Thanks for the warm hospitality, hope to see you at Hillheads next week for what will hopefully be a cracking game

It's down to basic's at the end of the day and if you don't take your chances yesterday's result is what happens. Injustice it may seem after we totally dominated the game at home but None the less we are all behind the lads next Saturday to turn the table on them. Whitley Bay had two chances in the second half and they took them!!

Even though it hurt losing the lead, you had to appreciate a beautifully taken free kick. One final thought (that'll be the day they all think) Mickey Hubbard! Mickey Hubbard, he doesn't score that many and he doesn't do the do-or-die defending that catch the eye. However of ALL the players I would hate to leave it is Mickey. He is the heart of the team and his vision and distribution make it easier for the others to play.

It appears he is not a regulat supporter and all I talked to said they had never seen him before. That is the problem when you are succesfull at this level you get the idiot hangers on.

A Bay fans vie What a game, what a journey Poole fans, hope you are up for the journey, home to home, it was a 23 hour marathon Would have hated to make the return if we had been hammered, and we could easily have been if you knew how to finish
Good luck for the journey next week, you will need it
Best part of 800 miles of tedium journey, cold motorway cafes, and motorway robbery, bottled water at twice the price of petrol, and greasy beef burgers or plastic chicken you need a mortgage for
For the first ten minutes, Poole were nervous, and if only Robbo or Chow had more composure, we could easily have taken the lead
After that totally out fought, out battled as the hosts threw everything at the Bay, including a couple of (allegedgly) forearm smashes, and a couple of grabs of the Bay Keepers jewels Poole faster to the tackle, quicker in closing down in defence, and faster and more incisive in attack
A couple of great saves from young Kyle, and what appeared hacking off the goal line when he was beaten
The Godfather foresook his seat in the stands for the last half hour, bad knee or not, it was time to get behind the goal, and most importantly, the lads for the final push.
My pre match prediction of 2 nil to the Bay was looking sick
Three minutes from the end, I remarked to Old Bell and Rattle that to keep the score down to one nil was a great result in the circumstances, and set us up for the second leg.
Then sub Rowe broke up an attack in the 89th minute with an accidental use of his hand, ref played on, and the ball found its way to Chow right of the penalty area, he crossed, Kerr was crowded out, but Caption Dammo was on hand to slam it into the net
One all, celebrations all round, Poole heads dropped and centre half Brian Smith was sent forward for all set pieces .
Third minute of injury time, and Chowie played a cross field ball to Fawcett, he cut inside 28yards out, and was taken out by a foul
Up stepped Kerr Chow to the mark, Brian Smith went to the far post, two defenders went to mark him, and the most delightful free kick was curled around the 5 man wall, and just whistled into the net
How did we do it?
I have no idea, perhaps the ten and a half hour coach journey on Friday had left the players tired, don't know, but remember that Poole have to make the same journey next week !
We were in the game less than at Dunston in the last round, we won that one in the last ten minutes, and Poole should have been out of sight by then
We won Poole in the last few minutes of the game having been second best for over 80 minutes I can only recall the Poole Keeper making one save in the whole game before the two goals flew past him
Can Whitley play as bad as that in the return? Doubt it
But hang onto your hats, Poole are not out of it, their backs are to the wall, they know that they have to score two more goals than Bay to win this one, and one the evidence of this game, they are more than capable of it
Expect fire and brimstone, a cracking game, but don't expect to find all 22 men on the pitch by the end of the game Will look forward to meeting your fans next week, I am reliably informed that the manager of the nearest pub to the ground, 'Last Orders' has extended a warm welcome to Poole fans, and he has no problem with Dolphin fans carrying daffodils .
Its the final count down.....

Just had time to get on the computer after a mammoth journey and a game myself early this morning.
I was hoping to be the first to appologise for the "Bay Fan" who got onto the pitch and completely embarresed himself. I have been to every Bay game (home and away) for 4 years and have never seen him before. Just hope that you guys dont think we were all bad because of the one a***hole.
All in all i had a great day out With the Bell End Choir (as usual) apart from the fact we were awful for 85 mins. I thought at the start of the game that a draw would happily do us to advance next weekend, but if we play anywhere near that standard then i fear not even a 2-1 win will be good enough.
Great hospitality and we hope you have a safe journey down next week.
