The Highest League position in the club records needs updating.

In the 60s, the Southern League and Northern Leagues were immediately below the Football League although there was no automatic promotion at that time. So we were effectively at National League level and hence one league higher than in 2016/2017.

Yes I remember it well, That's fair enough but any one who didn't know that would think other wise, one other thing the season given as the highest finish 1966-67 the club seemed to end the season in 17th position, The season 1968-69 I think was the highest finish at 16th checked from two different sources

Maybe I will add 2016/2017 as highest this century.

Quite correct ballboy. My source tells me that Poole Town did, indeed, finish 16th in the Southern Premier League at the end of season 1968-69.
However, after winning the old Western League Division 1 in 1956-57, the club finished 10th at the end of season 1957-58 in what was then the Southern League (no Premier or other division labels then because the Southern League in those days had just one section and - as John said - was one of the two leagues immediately below the Football League).
Incidentally, both the Western League and the Southern League included, in those far off years, some familiar clubs such as Salisbury, Chippenham (Town and United), Dorchester and Taunton in the Western League and Weymouth, Bath City, Gloucester and Kettering in the Southern League. And some less familiar clubs such as Glastonbury, Wells City, Barnstaple and Trowbridge in the Western League and Cheltenham, Lovells Athletic, Barry Town and Guildford City in the Southern League. How times change!
Thus, I would argue that Poole's highest ever finish was 10th in the Southern League in 1957-58 and John should go ahead and enter 2016-2017 as its highest ever finish in the 21st Century.

Yes I think you have a point there about 10th place finish 57-58, But it looks like the Club prefers the Southern Premier League 16th finish for what ever reason, I still have some of those programmes from then including the first home game of the 57-58 season v Barry Town.

Nice one expat. Lots of us 'oldies' would like a look at that line up.
I omitted to mention alongside PTFC's 10th place finish in the old SL in the 1957-1958 season that I seem to recall reading somewhere that around about 1958 Poole applied to join the Football League. No chance of course, partly because in those days the Football League almost automatically re-elected whichever club finished last.

On the same day over at Dean Court in front of 16,567 B&BA won 2-1 against Watford in what was to be the last season of Division 3 (South). So it was in 58-59 that England went from 2 completely national divisions to 4.

Even more amazing crowdwise was the probability that all of that crowd were locals. Barry was a long way away in 1957.

Yes, thanks ballboy. Great memories indeed. Some very good players in that line up, notably Bill Gillett of course, John Kirk in goal, the man himself - Stan Rickaby - and so on. Good point Dave, the attendance is astonishing by today's standards but it was a couple of levels higher than we are today. And Boscombe entertaining a crowd in the old Division 3 South that that is getting on for twice what AFCB get in the 'League of Greed' today! Your knowledge of stars of the silver screen is almost as impressive as your knowledge of PTFC expat, you should "come up and see me some time"!

Of course if Dean Court were bigger, say 25,000 then they would probably fill that most weeks in the LofG but might struggle if they ever get relegated. As for us Tatnam meets our needs for now. Except when we play our neighbours in Dorset. It also has character, which I fear a new stadium of, concrete & steel wouldn't have. Although when the time is right, either Tatnam or another site will need to be developed so we can not only make a longer stay in National League South but look to go even higher. In 1958 their were only two fully national divisions containing just 44 clubs playing. Now we have 5 containing 116 & most of them full time too. Hopefully it won't be too long until the Dolphins join them. And this time we will gain promotion & not have to apply cap in hand to the higher ups. We will be there of right. But 1st we have to get back out of the Southern League. Until then the future is on hold. COYD 🐬

Yes can't wait to get back up to National League South, But the team will need to be brought up to National League South Standard, Todays Southern League is only a shadow of its former self.

The Auld Enemy won a BIG one last night(what were we saying!!) Our Captsin says we are about 4 players short of play off contention BOD go out and get 'em and the faithful will respond This thread reminds us of our proud history and of course we hope for the future. Anyway tonight I am watching the MLS playoffs with PTFC playing in Kansas, That's Portland Timbers who get about 30,000 for their home games. Darling of the League at the moment is Atlanta whlo play before 70,000 in a beautiful facility named for Mercedes
