Mandy and I have just got back after travelling on the last voyage from Poole to Cherbourg aboard 'The Barfleur'. My cousin was 'officially' the last 'foot' passenger to set foot on the ferry and was presented with a 'Barfleur' teddy from the 'Barfleur' crew. He subsequently gave the teddy to my wife!!
But what a sad occasion for the 'Port of Poole' to lose a service to France when clearly the lack of publicity let it down.
There will from March be only one day service to Cherbourg which is a shame.
There is a short film someone has taken of the Barfleur passing the Haven around 0015am for the last time. A camera flash can be seen at approx 01:08 and that was me as there was only my cousin and I outside at the time filming the historic event!!

;D ;D ;D My dad always told me that Poole harbour's shallow channels prevented big boats coming in........now look at that 29.500 tonne beauty Armorique...maybe someone will put some footage on youtube.
Is the Cat service a lot more expensive?? ...and its a darn shame that business is going begging, did anyone ever suggest upgrading the railway line from Hamworthy Jct to New Quay for containers

Au Revoir. I didn't notice our esteemed Council or the local Chamber of Commerce putting up a public fight to save it though....

X PAT, PHC got what was coming. NO infrastructure leading to the port. A350, A31. Being a ' driver', you don't look forward to shipping out of Poole the roads are cr*p!. Lorries have got; longer, heavier and wider. A350 Shaftesbury road (not been touched) A31 Wimborne by-pass (single track) A35 Bere Regis (TOO NARROW in places) should of been a councilor lol.

I agree Expat, it is a darn shame and it's a shame the 'in situ' railway line is not used more? In fact I know it is only used once a week at the moment and that is NOT for the ferry traffic but to unload stone - still if it keeps lorries out of the port thats got to be good.

You're far too aware and logical to be a councillor with the above comments!! As somone who commutes to the other side of Hampshire every day,and travels to Devon regularly the first/last ten miles of my journeys are the worst. How can Poole and the surrounding area develop with such poor road links..

We are now off thursday evening for a day trip from Poole to Cherbourg on board the Armorique for our final time.
The actual service from Poole to Cherbourg with the 'Big' ship finishes when the 'Armorique' sails out of Poole Harbour on Sunday the 7th March at 1230....
