Am running Vista on my pc at home, which crashes virtually every time it's running. Is it worth downloading Linux Ubuntu or anything? or any other ideas?

:oWhat are you doing when it crashes? Is it a reasonably new PC? Did Vista come installed on it? Or is it something you have installed yourself What cpu and ram have you got?
Open your case and check that everything is seated correctly especially graphics card and ram
Nice to answer a question with more questions lol

It's a one year old Advent lap-top. It came "naked" and then installed Vista from new. I'm at work (?!) at the mo, but have one hacked off wife at home :-)

2gb of ram should be ample to run Vista. Is it still under warranty
