I should have known things were going to go all out of shape half way through my journey down to the coast when I bumped into the " mother of all traffic jams " at the M3/M27 Junction. Instead of sitting there I opted to drive into Southampton and follow the A35 out through Totton and the New Forest to rejoin the M27. As I drove over the Estuary at Totton Bridge I peered over to my right and spotted the floodlights of AFC Totton and had an instant reminder of our position in the league, remembering the recent 1-0 loss.
From Memory of my trip to Moneyfields away I recalled they are a good solid team, well organised and like to attack. There was no doubt that Moneyfields were going to be stiff opposition today but so was the weather as the icy cold wind demonstrated as it swept through Tatnam. Poole found themselves with a hard "Ask" as they kicked against the wind in the first half and notably with the quick breaks of Moneyfields and their skillful number nine the opinion of all around me was to keep them out then use the wind to our advantage in the second half. And so we did with some stout defending, well Marshalled by Rico and Luke.
There was only going to be one winner for the first half...
...Weather 1 v Football 0
Now with the wind behind them Poole got stuck in straight from the off and the first minute saw a Cann shot fly just over the bar, more was to follow as Dann took a Free Kick from 30yards and we all watched as his dipping flighted shot was palmed over the bar by their keeper. With the driving icy wind came wave after wave of Poole attacks and on 59 mins Skelts drove a shot just over, this was followed with the emergence of Taffy on for Culli on 62 mins and Steve Smith on for Holmes on 70 mins, It's fair to say that Holmes is starting to look fitter and better with every game and is making more of an impression.
As Poole pressed forward a goal mouth scramble had us gapping open mouthed as Brown tried to convert from close up, only for it to be blocked on the line and cleared away. On 80 minutes TK threw on Saadi for Brown and in between a Gill shot over and a Skelts header over Poole did have the ball in the net in what looked like a perfectly good goal. A fantastic ball was played out of midfield to the right side of the Moneyfields area where it was headed across goal, With the keeper stranded Taffy arrived to sweep the ball into the net and as we all thought the deadlock had been broken the lino flagged for off-side.
To say we were all gutted by the decision would be an understatement, TK seemed the most affected as you could argue all the hard work put in over the season could easily be undone by one decision but to be fair to the officials they can only go by what they feel and hopefully decisions balance themselves out over the course of the season. But lets not take anything away from Moneyfields either, an accomplished side who came and done their job, instead I can't help casting my mind back to draws away at Hamble and Bemerton where we had total control but let both games slip into draws.
What we would do for those 4 points now.
And so to Hamworthy this Wednesday night in what will be a big local Derby.
