Consett were knocked out of the FA Vase in the cruellest fashion imaginable losing their 5th Round tie away to Merstham 4-5 after extra time. On an unseasonably warm day, the Steelmen began extremely well dominating the opening half an hour, passing their hosts off the park, and deservedly leading through Steven Brown's strike (pictured above) on 18 minutes. Merstham gradually came back into the game though, hitting the bar either side of half time, before Steven Johnson doubled Consett's advantage on 63 minutes. Merstham struck back seven minutes later through Mark Simmonds, but Consett seemed to be seeing the game out comfortably until the intervention of the officials five minutes into stoppage time. With Consett on the attack there was an altercation off the ball between Carl Piecha and Nick Greenhouse. On the advice of the linesman the referee stopped the game to brandish a red card at Piecha, and award the home side a penalty which Craig Vernon converted. Greenhouse in the meantime incredibly walked away scot free. Despite this, the heroic Steelmen lifted themselves to go 4-2 up in extra time, Mattie Moffat capitalising on a defensive mix-up 18 seconds after the restart and David Pounder curling in a majestic free kick into the top corner in the 103rd minute. Consett were a spent force after that though, and with a near-hysterical home crowd behind them, Merstham stormed back with goals from Chris Read, Greenhouse and Vernon to complete the victory. The manner of this defeat was particularly hard to take, and regrettably opinions about the London-based officials will have to be expressed away from the official website.
