Hayling came to town looking to add Pooles scalp to their recent indifferent form. With some reasonable scalps already claimed and some games won and lost on close margins the thought amongst most was this game was never going to be easy, that is unless you're our resident Crystal Ball merchant slepe12 who came the closest with his prediction
In the end Poole ran out very convincing 7-0 winners, thanks mainly to a fantastic team effort in the second half and Two Cracking goals from Dan Cann that would have graced any game in league football.
The first half got under way with each side testing the other and looked like it was heading for a tight game, indeed we didn't get a first shot on target till the 18th minute when Cann laid the ball off to Culli who's shot in the penalty area was saved well by the big keeper, however it only took a minute later to register the first goal, when a Trefor Smith ball in was headed over the keeper by Dan Cann for the first goal of his afternoon's hat-trick.
Trefor was chasing down well, as well as trying to find an opening to help add to the tally. So was Browner who's good run and pass into the box was met by a Cann shot, only to be cleared off the line. Brown also had a shot blocked after Rico had pushed up to put the keeper under pressure only for the ball to break to Brown on his own in the box. On 34 minutes Trefor as busy as ever fed another ball into the area and this time Culli met the ball, turned and fired low into the net for Poole's second.
H/T 2-0
The second half got under way in driving rain and as the heavens opened up so did Hayling's defence with the onslaught of Poole attacks. Skelton pushing up nearly added to the score in the first minute but the ball skidded away on the wet surface as Skelts charged into the area. Holmes looks to be settling in and was himself throwing balls forward, one such was met by a Brown head with the ball flying wide.
On 57 minutes Taffy replaced Skelts who looked to limp off and not long after Poole went three up when a Brown ball into the area found Culli who shot low into the net. Poole were now camped in the opposition's half and on a couple of occasions Harvell was called upon to save at the feet of attackers from break-away runs. Stevo replaced Gill on 65 minutes, then on 75 minutes we saw the first of two Cann " Specials " A high ball was floated onto the edge of the area and with two clean touches Cann chested, then volleyed a looping ball over the keeper and just inside the far post, Excellent stuff!! and 4-0. His delight was shown in his celebration as he swallow dived onto the wet muddy surface ;D
On 78 minutes Ayres was on for Culli as TK looked to freshen things up. Just after Trefor had a dig from just outside the area and the ball flew over the bar. On 81 minutes Cann Wrapped up his Hat-trick with another " Corker " this time recieving the ball around 30 yards out, just to the right of centre of the penalty area, and from the same distance he arrowed a powerful shot past the outstretched keeper for 5-0. Ayres was also trying some teasing runs and had a shot go over the bar. With 5 minutes left another ball was floated into the area and this time Stuart Brown rose to head the ball past the keeper from close up for Poole's sixth. Poole's seventh came on 87 minutes when the energetic Hogan, who never gives up the cause, powered towards the area. With the defender pulling on Hoge's shirt, Hoge's powered into the box cutting back a low ball for Steve Smith to turn into the net.
F/T 7-0
Well done lads a great team effort with my MOM being Dan Cann for two great goals that made my 140 mile round trip worthwhile.
Next stop is Saturday and Moneyfields at home.
