In a game that Poole should have had wrapped up by the time Funnell fired home the third late in the second half, to make the score 3-1 to Poole,Poole with many youngsters on the pitch showed their naivety to concede two late goals and let two valuable promotion points slip.
The team started
Harvell
Yelland, Whitley, Richardson(Capt), Funnell
T Smith, Culliford, C Smith, P Smith
S Smith, D Cann
Subs Ayres,Wilson,Sturgess
If there was a game where Experience was missed, then this was it.Its great to have so many promising youngsters giving their all but there is also a time when the likes of Taffy and Karim could have shown the youngsters a thing or two, especially in the second half when things started to get a touch heated.
Poole went in at half time 2-0 to the good with goals from Steve Smith from close range after Pete Smith had allegedly hooked the ball back from over the by line for Stevo to finish off in the 3rd minute.
The second was from a well worked corner after Trefor Smith had tested the keeper who pushed the ball wide of the post...Trefor took the corner out to Dan Cann and from 30 yards Dan blasted the ball into the bottom left corner for the goal of the game.
There were other efforts but the Poole forwards were up against a 'trigger happy armed' lino who seemed to raise his flag at every opportunity.
The second half saw one change with Sturgess replacing Pete Smith,we also saw some rash late tackles flying in by the Bemerton players and on 56 minutes the skillful trefor was replaced by AFCBournemouth youngster Shayne Ayres, after Trefor looked to be hobbling with an ankle injury...at the back Ian 'Rico' Richardson was putting in some solid headers and Harvell was also on hand at times racing out to clear.
Around 18 minutes into the second half the Bemerton 11 walked for a late tackle on Luke and in the small melee the followed Ian Richardson also received a yellow.Luke didn't recover from the tackle and was replaced by another AFCB youngster Rico Wilson.
Cann now moved back ,while Rico Wilson accompanied Steve smith up front.
Shortly after the ten men of Bemerton gained a goal back and as so often happens,a ten man team started to make things uncomfortable for the eleven man opposition, not helped by Pooles injury situation and the change in shape to the Dolphins team.
Another good move saw Yelland progress up the pitch with a lovely ball to Steve Smith, which was eventually cleaned up by the defence. Then with around 15 minutes left things got interesting and with the young improving Rico Wilson causing problems with a shot that cannoned off the Bemerton keeper, funnell was on hand to smash the rebound home for Pooles third to make it 3-1.
The young Shane Ayres was also making himself known with some nice little runs that also saw him have a shot land on the roof of the net.Unfortunately the experience we lacked on the pitch told and Poole Conceded two late goals in the final 6 minutes, the first one was nearly the carbon copy of Poole's first goal when the ball looked to go out of play, only to be hooked back across goal to be fired home.Bemertons third followed shortly after and although Poole had a late shot cleared off the line the game ended all even at three all.
And so to Lymington next week, hopefully with Taffy to help with some leadership on the park,i get the feeling he would have enjoyed todays game. ;D
