With Wimborne now closing the gap and breathing down the Dolphins necks it was imperative that Downton were dispatched in true style and reading through Tommy Killicks notes in the programme prior to the game it is apparent that Tommy is well aware of how clubs would be motivated that little bit harder when you are top of the pile,as Poole are...i refer to it as 'Cup Syndrome' myself, the same sort of motivation that sees non league clubs take big scalps sometimes on an annual basis.
Poole started with a few changes from the previous Saturdays win at Alresford,Skelton came back in defence with Ian Richardson making way for the impressive Yelland.
Dan Cann was also rested, recovering from an injury, and was replaced by Trefor Smith.....the front partnership of the hard working Ben Osborne, making his home debut continued alongside the pacey Steve Smith.
Poole got under way with a lovely long ball out of defence and over the top for the pacey Steve Smith to run onto which ended with a challenge and ball cleared...again Steve Smith tried to reach a ball supplied by the hard working Osborne but Downtons keeper was on hand to save....Smith wasn't to be denied the following effort when after a ball over the top of a static Downton defence found S Smith running on and as he approached the keeper he took one look up and plotted the balls route into the bottom right hand corner GOAL!! 1-0
Downton never let their heads go down and although Poole didn't seem to be in top gear,Downton to their credit fought hard, this was reflected when a DFC player found himself in plenty of room to fire over..Poole came back with a great Whitley long ball for Sturgess to run on to and shoot just over, while up the other end Downton won a free kick which the DFC 10,Hoare tried to curve around the wall, and although well on target Big Max was alerted to catch firmly.
There was a nice interchange between Culli and Sturgess on the right with the later having a shot at goal that went just over,in another move Culli found Osborne who put in a good cross for Steve Smith to head just wide of the near post...Taff was getting in on the act with some good balls into space that the pacey Smith was lapping up yet the second goal was struggling to come, until 40 minutes when persistence by Yelland found time and space to hit a long ball 35 yards out from the right across the penalty area with the ball looking to elude everyone and heading to run out for a goal kick Trefor Smiths equal persistence to chase the ball paid off,he whipped the ball back in and from 25 yards young Funnel found the back of the net with a low shot, GOAL 2-0
This seemed to rile Downton and for the next few minutes before halftime some of the tackles were being dealt out in clattering style.
H/T 2-0
After a quick pint and 15 minutes out of the cold wind to check how the 'non leaguers' were getting on in the first round of the FA cup i took my position again at the touch line in the hope of seeing the second half rout i had witnessed v New Milton a month earlier, when after leading 1-0 at half time the Dolphins rattled in 5 second half goals.... but on observation and being close to the Downton dug out it was clear they were fighting for a damage limitation policy.
They worked hard at it and their big number 10 battled well to the sounds of 'Crouchy' being shouted from the touch line by the management staff, but other than a couple of rallying runs by the Downton 10 it was more or less effort after effort by Poole, Funnel took a couple of free kicks in an attempt to emulate last weeks majestic winner at Alresford, and Sturgess played Smith in for a 'one on one' which triggered a pinball effect with shots on the oppos goal, but for the keeper to save...in the end it took some good harrying by Taff to feed the ball through to Steve Smith who this time made no mistake to shoot hard and low,for number three,GOAL!!
TK changed things around a little with some inspired subs,Bowden for Culli and Chris Smith for Skelton...shortly followed by Lima for Steve Smith.....Lima looked good as did Bowden and it was young Bowden that won the penalty with minutes to spare as he was upended as he tried a run into the box from the by line......enter the hard working Ben Osborne to step up and tuck the ball away for his debut goal and to make the final score 4-0 GOAL!!
Onwards to Hamworthy next week with an appearance in the FA Vase second qualifying round.
