I was looking forward to the game last night, primarily to see Poole's football again but also to check out VTFC,they seem like a club with 'something in the water' and have both their youth and reserve teams heading their respective divisions.
Their first team also are no mugs having played eleven games and losing just the once, scoring 33 goals in the process,i also remember this was the side narrowly edged out of the FA cup last season by the then challenging Connie South runners up Salisbury.
So this was always going to be a hard fought game and the opposing player that stood out for me was their number ten Tyrone Bowers,he scored after 15 minutes to give the home side the lead and indeed hit the post again later in the first half after another good move.
The game was being played in a good competitive spirit and the Poole number two Sturgess was orchestrating a lot of the moves from the back,Poole leveled when a fantastic defence splitting pass was thread through to Brown into the centre of the area, and as browner raced ahead of the defender and the keeper ran out Browner was pulled down, from the awarded penalty Brown made no mistake and pulled the scores level...there was room for some more attacks with Trefor having a deflected shot just wide of the post, the first half finished 1-1.
In the second half Poole took hold of the game a lot more, and urged on by their very good travelling support which must have made up 50% of the nights attendance Poole pushed for an opening..,Brown shot just over after a great ball played across field to him from Funnel,at the other end frampton made a good save from a free kick.
TK made a telling substitution early in the second half bringing on the lively young goal scoring machine Steve Smith for Browner and the youngster, who was plucked from the Dorset league wasted no time in using his pace to unsettle the VT defence,Poole were now working hard pushing up and the numbers 4 and 5,Whitley and Richardson respectively were playing some good through balls...Trefor was now becoming lively and after testing the keeper with a low shot latched on to yet another great pass and wasted no time waltzing into the by line where he fed a low ball into the box to the speedy Steve Smith to Knock low under the keeper for Poole's Winner GOAL!!
Poole were still applying the pressure well and there is nothing better than watching a 40 year old bloke running around enjoying himself like Taffy was,it made me feel young ;D and after a good run by Whitley who passed to Trefor the ball was crossed for Taffy to head just wide of the VT post.
Whitley was working well pushing some good balls up the wing but he also made a very good run into the VT half and after receiving the ball 30 yards out hammered a great shot just clear of the VT bar,VT had a good share of the pressure in the final minutes forcing 3 corners but a resolute defence and good keeping held firm and the 3 points headed back down the M27 to Tatnam Farm.
This was a good result based on another good team performance but for me young Sturgess was one of many that shone through.
