Reading through the programme notes,i found it quite ironic that the well respected Trevor Parker was leading his team out to face Poole,a Club a decade or more ago ,when he was the manager, that he helped in the rise of the homeless PTFC from their then, recent demise,....not so severe this time for him but a challenge none the less was the restructuring of Lymington & New Milton to the present 'New Milton Town' and the building of his new squad....a man that obviously relishes a challenge, hats off to him.
If Tommy Killicks warriors trotted out in the first half then they certainly 'hit the ground running' in the second period, testament to their fitness also was the way in which they kept the tempo rising till the final whistle.
The line up featured,
1.Frampton
2.Yelland
3.Sturgess
4.Whitley
5.Ian Richardson
6.Taffy Richardson
7.Culliford
8.S Smith
9.T Smith
10.Benssaouda
11.Cann
Subs,Funnel,Cannie,Killick,Skelton,Cuss.
Straight from the off ,Taffy was involved in nearly every move hustling and challenging and stamping his authority on the game early on,Trefor Smith was also expressing himself well with some good dribbling, and with Poole pushing for an opening one such 'Trefor dribble' led to a corner in the seventh minute, and as the ball was crossed in ,culliford rose to head home ...GOAL!! 1-0
Except for a few New Milton forays into the Poole half the lions share of the play was at the visitors end and not long after the opening goal T Smith had a header that came back off the post and was cleared, even Yelland pushing up won a corner with Dan Cann getting behind a goal wards shot that was touched away by Watson in the NM Goal.
Trefor Was also back helping in the defence and Sturgess was aiding with some solid challenges....none the less New milton were trying to hit on the counter and Frampton was called upon to save a low shot in the 20th minute from the NM number 4.
S Smith and Trefor were combining well ,with the later again showing some entertaining tricks but Poole just lacked that cutting edge to extend their lead.
The New Milton number 6 went into the book for a challenge just inside the NM half and from the well taken Long free kick Culliford got up to head...only for Watson to save.
A second NM players name was taken when after some good work between Trefor Smith and S Smith the NM number 3 put in a challenge that the ref didn't altogether agree with.
Karim was busying himself and pushing on and made a good turn and snap shot just over...Karim also found his name added to the book...this was a good half with the team working hard for each other and i would bore you if i kept mentioning all eleven names over and over, needless to say that although Poole went in at half time only 1-0 up more goals could have been added.
H/T 1-0
This was always going to be hard for Trevor Parkers lads as with both teams on the opposite ends of different runs there was hardly going to be an upset and it seemed only time would tell till Poole added to their tally...on 50 minutes after a good run and pass which found Karim on the left of goal, the energetic goal scorer turned and shot sending a looping ball high over the advancing keeper and into the net for Poole's second GOAL!! 2-0
New Milton tried to get things going and a rare attack was stopped by Taffy who played a long accurate ball up field out of defence to S Smith who crossed for Karim to shoot just wide only for the ref to blow for off side anyway......on 56 minutes More Poole pressure paid off when a mix up in the NM defence saw S Smith more or less in the same position as Karim for his goal ,and Smiths fine lob beat Watson yet again to make it 3-0 GOAL!!
Poole were now 'on fire' and pressing hard with the bit between their teeth, showing the New Milton side no mercy,Dan Cann saw an opportunity and smashed a long shot goal wards ...the shot crashed off one post and across goal to the other post and as it deflected out Steve Smith was on hand to fire home from close range for his second and Poole's fourth ..... GOAL!!
To be fair to New Milton they were well drilled and never let their heads drop and at times were knocking the ball around just as good as the home side, but with some hard working displays from the Poole lads it was clear to see who was the dominant side and as they pressed forward yet again the NM number 3 who had been competing well all afternoon pulled back Steve Smith as he went in search of his hat-trick just inside the penalty area.
The ref pointed at the spot immediately and the NM number 3 knew it was an early shower without the need to see the ref flashing the crimson card....Steve Smith stepped up and hit the penalty with ease beyond the keeper for his third and Poole's fifth ....GOAL!! 5-0
With just under half an hour left it seemed like double figures were a possibility, goal wise, and TK sent on Stuart Cannie to replace the hat trick hero,Steve Smith.......Trefor was still giving good energy and after another good run and pass Sturgess who had made a run ,shot just over.......Cannie was now in on the action and using his strength on the ball to further disrupt the New milton defence, and had a good shot saved by the keeper,Watson.
On 70 minute Funnel replaced 'skillman trefor' and with the fresh subs made by TK came another 'up tempo' in Poole's play ...the strong and disciplined Cannie tried to set up Karim but the keeper just got to the ball first...again Cannie was using his strength to hold off as he tried hard to set up the sixth goal but the final sequence just eluded the Poole players...Culliford was also being industrious down the right and with confidence spreading through the side,on the rare occasion the ball found its self in the Poole defence the backs were stroking the ball from side to side.....this was high lighted when Yelland threaded a ball up the right to Funnel who's quick accurate first touch sent culliford on his way down the right ,only for the ball to be cleared.
On 86 minutes Poole got their sixth when after some good play ,Funnel cracked a fine shot from distance that beat Watson and flew into the bottom right corner to round off a fine team display....GOAL!! 6-0
Could i choose a Man of the Match,no,not really, yes there was the driving force of Taffy, the skill of Trefor, the strength of Cannie, the industriousness of Culliford, the determination of Karim and all the running and covering of the rest of them.. so man of the match for me would have to be all those that took part....Men of the match.
And on this display all those that paid a fiver got some good value for money, including myself on my first visit to Tatnam Farm.
Final Score, Poole Town 6 v New Milton Town 0
