Just read Steves report on the VT game. Got to say totally agree with Steve. If we look at how far we have come since this time last year I think the answer is 'NOT FAR' yes losing Leo was a major factor but the constant chopping and changing does not help anyone. From my point of veiw the best strike force I have seen was at Moneyfields away Carl and Browner. They haven't played together since! I would say we could have easily finished in the top ten of the league on HALF our playing budget, which tells me something is not right. Discipline is a major factor which I am affraid has a bad example set most weeks from our bench. Also every 'big' game we just do not perform. Taunton against 10 men, Frome Town, Ham Utd, Gosport, Totton, Sherborne Town all competent teams but no better than we should be. Next season who do we want to still be here? I think the reserves is a positive point moving up into the combination and consolidating their place but there are a lot negatives I am sorry to say. A lot of thinking should be done during the close season on how to turn this round.

What a good result winning 10-1 on Sat. Playing two strikers up front made all the differance. " PLEASE PLEASE" Tom play two strikers up front every week.

Purely as a supporter, whilst agreeing with much of the content of the VT report what I find equally as irritating as the author seems to have found this season is the questioning of players not doing their jobs (putting in the effort) - bar one.
Seeing first hand the sacrifices, dedication, effort and loyalty (quite rightly) that is put in over the course of a week (not just match days) for the cause it is infuriating that this is simply blown away by the tapping of the keys on a keyboard. Yes, if players are not “doing their job” they will be questioned, but broad brush statements such as the one I have read this morning, gets the old gander up to say the least.
Tell you what, get 11 knuckle-draggers who just take the bladder out of the thing in, and spend next year blasting the ball all over the place - in fact let’s get rid of the bloody lot !!!
(Just as an aside, it may be worth remembering that the role in any given side can often be assigned by the manager for the benefit of the team, supporters are often not privy to the role a player has been asked to carry out and this may not always be to their liking from the outside looking in).
We’d all love to have won the thing this year. But it may just be progress is the measure. Eight last year (first year up), battling for third (but looks like fourth) this year and top local side.
In my opinion, next year it will happen. Given the right summer, PTFC will be very successful next year. Lessons will be learnt this year, and taken on board by Tom et al.
However, given the tone of the end of the VT article it could be very interesting.
Still, football is a game of opinion – Some just see it differently to others !

Whooaaa there Tony! Easy tiger!
Thought THAT report might generate a response or two!!
I hardly think I'm 'blowing away' all the effort, dedication etc by simply writing what I think. That's why I emphasised in the report that it was very much my own personal thoughts on that performance. I am also aware that it's very easy for me to tap away at a keyboard as that's all I have to do and I don't have to put in any more effort than that. However, I have been doing this website now for nearly 8 years and I'd like to think that overall I'm pretty fair in what I write. A lot of websites for teams at our level are so biased towards their team that it is ridiculous. Every defeat is underserved, every booking is wrong etc etc.
When the team play well (which is the majority of the time) then my report will reflect that but equally if I feel they haven't done well then I'll report that too.
For this particular performance I really did leave the game feeling angry at the performance (and sulked all the way home and next day!) For me, there were too many players 'going through the motions' and there WAS far too much 'bladdering the ball' all over the park. Seeing defenders launch it with a big hoof every time they got it (to cries of 'Good enough') was annoying. To me it's not 'good enough' and that's simply because every player in the team is better than that. And when we do get it down and play I still don't think there is a better footballing side in the league - period.
There is no question over any of the players ability - I think Tom has put together an extremely talented bunch of players and the fact that so many of them are so young is fantastic for the club. I'm already excited at the thought of the what this team can go on and achieve next season and totally support Tom as the man to guide them there. Tom is a 'winner' and I wouldn't want to see anyone else in charge at this club.
For what it's worth, I had to smile when I read the VT report in the matchday programme on Saturday. That concluded by saying it was 'a fine perfomance' by Poole so obviously he saw it quite differently to me. Which, as you say, is what football is all about. We all think we know best and most of us (including me) probably haven't got a clue.
It was a personal opinion on one game so please don't take it as a 'broad brush statement' of where I think the team are.
And at least we have this messageboard where all opinions can be expressed - which is great too.
As I can't make the game this evening please give the lads a cheer from me,
Regards,
Steve

Hi Steve,
Web site great. (8 years labour of love – who am I anyway, just a Johnny come lately !!)
Biased reports – pointless.
Personal opinion makes the game the great talking shop it is.
Results in high profile games – totally agree.
Squad next year needs strengthening with quality, not the typical“revolving door” Wessex player.
Young players – If they feature in Toms future plans, the club have to hang on to them.
So, we actually agree on much.
What really, really got me going (and still has) is not worth (to the reader in general) pursuing.
Nuff on this now, as it will turn into 2 guys having a conversation with a 100 or so listening in !!!!
Cheers, Tony W.

Everyone will have a view on this one (and you can prove anything you like with statistics), but I'm not sure just how much progress has been made this year. Remember the League lost three strong teams last summer (Winchester, Thatcham and Andover). Assuming our record against the promoted teams wasn't exceptional compared with other teams, we would have finished 5th in 2005/6 without those teams in the league. This year we are 4th, and will need to finish well to retain that place.
Our record last year was P42 W21 D8 L13 PTS71.
Take out the games against the three promoted teams and our record was P36 W20 D6 L10 PTS66.
Our current record is P35 W20 D4 L11 PTS64.
Not much different?
It might be pointed out that our goal difference is significantly better this season. But note that the results against the promoted teams (Brading, Downton, Horndean and Ringwood) contribute +27 of our +43 goal difference (and last season's goal difference was +19, or +25 if we take out the games against the promoted teams again).
This suggests to me we are performing about the same as last season in a weaker league?
