With Steve Bean absent & Slepe demanding a report, I'll have a go but I am sure others will assist.
What a great match. Brian's optimistic prediction was almost right! You know its a high score when the crowd keep debating the score, was it 7-3 or 6-4. To clarify it was Poole 6 Newport 3.
For once the defence looked a bit shaky but this was more than compensated by a fantastic attack.
Yet again Poole got off to a flier. Gilly's shot was very cleverly flicked on by Charlie - who is improving with every game in my eyes. 1 up after 7 minutes. It was within 10 minutes that Poole had number 2 - another quality stike from Charlie from a brilliant through ball from Gilly. He should have had his hatrick within half an hour, possibly the easier of his 3 chances hitting the side netting.
Just when we thought Poole were cruising Newport were back in it. A very cleverly worked free kick with a bullet of a shot from their large defender. Poole were then really in shock when Newport scored again - an even more awesome strike from (I think) outside the box.
To be fair Poole kept going. Just before half time they won a free kick on the edge of the area. I expected Micky to take but Billy was poised and unleashed a fantastic shot in to the top corner.
So 3 -2 at half time - fantastic entertainment.
Poole started off the second half just like the first. Charlie hitting his hatrick with another great strike. Soon it was 5 with Browners (Stuart) getting on the score sheet.
Tommy felt confident enough at this point to take off Billy for Dan Taylor & then double substitute Charlie & Stuart Brown for Steve Smith & Jack Swann. Soon the crowd were nervous after Newport scored their third. Marking was much too loose allowing their number 7 to shoot. This should easily have been saved but slipped through Jason's hands & embarrassingly ended up in the back of the net.
Yet again Poole kept pressing & Steve Smith took a nicely taken goal to make it 6. Even then Poole kept pressing with Lam up for the corners. We could easily have had another 1 or 2. The weather became atrocious towards the end with the floodlights called in to action.
Newport were a decent team and credit to both teams for an attacking game of football played in a very clean manner - no cards and a pretty good referee (what a change from last week!).
At the start of the season a few of us (me included) were concerned about the strike force! Well not any longer - another 6 goal fest. Charlie Austin is looking a fantastic striker and with Stuart Brown these are the obvious pair to start. But we have some useful subs in Steve Smith & Jack Swann.
It was good to see a run out for Dan Taylor.
Do we all need to revise our predictions for Tuesday now?!
Great performance Poole Town, fantastic match (Slepe - you must be gutted to have missed this!).
