It is quite evident on here that like myself and Mandy there are a few 'Pirates' or even general speedway fans on here. I propose to start a thread where we can talk Speedway with an emphasis on Poole Pirates while the Footie has stopped and the MEN on the bikes take over!!
I will put all Pirates results on here and would love to hear about your Poole Pirates speedway memories..... Over to you guys....
perhaps SB would kindly 'pin' this thread?

I like it Steve! When I was a boy I went with my mum and "uncle Bert". I used to take a bag of pear drops every week and if the bag was empty at the end I knew it had been one-sided and not very exciting; if the bag was still full it had been too thrilling to remember to eat my pear drops. I used to stand on the north bend and get showered with shale as the riders went by - I think you could buy little plastic goggles to protect your eyes from it. My hero was Ken Middleditch.

I have had to change both our 'Pirates' start dates as after much consultation together it turns out we must have both started going to speedway in 1989 when we were both 14 years of age. We obviously did not know each other back then but we both remember the early days of a very young Leigh Adams and Alun Rossiter who was incidently captain of the 'Pirates' at this time!! My personal favourite rider of all time is Mark Loram who rode for Poole in the 1999 & 2000 seasons and while with Poole became the first Pirate to be crowned 'World Champion' in 2000. Two weeks ago Mandy and I attended along with 40 others an honuary meal for Mark in Bournemouth to celebrate his introduction into the Poole Pirates 'Hall of Fame' - www.poolespeedway.net/10-website/halloffame_open.phpA great evening was had and I managed to have a good lengthy chat with Mark which was really nice. Amongst our general chat I told Mark about the two model speedway bikes of his 2000 bikes I was having commisioned and hoping to have at the meal to show him but they took longer than first thought. Mark was very interested in them, so when they arrived on Saturday I emailed the link of the piccies from the website to him. If anyone is interested the two speedway bikes I had commisioned are from the second row onwards and include the rider figures: www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=115636&id=110471499492Incidently Mandy's favourite 'Poole Pirates' rider of all time is none other than 'Leigh Adams'

Wasn't improving/modernising the Stadium part of the deal for the grease monkeys when they got the Stadium? Was there yesterday and the stand does not look too good........

First meeting was in 74 against Ipswich, which was a golden helmet decider between John Louis & Peter Collins. Was there in 77 when Kevin Holden sadly passed away against Reading. Fave Pirate would have to be Eric Broadbelt & Michael lee. Only been to a Buccs match this season,as you'll see if you went to the Pirates/Belle Vue match last week, photo was in the prog !!

Back in the mists of time we had riders like ross gilbertson and Tony Lewis. There was a team called Liverpool Pirates and one of their riders used the old fashioned "leg trailing' style of riding. One year an aussie by the the name of Jack "The WASP" Scott (Think black and yellow hoops) got himself an oversize cam and was virtually unbeatable. Another rider renamed himself Tyburn Gallows and was good for a little aggro as the teams marched on to 'The Gladiators" Yes and i was raking shale at turn #1 and sometimes position jockey at the starting gate. Payment was 4 bob!! I understand that they don't use the JAP engines now but writing this i can smell that dope!! BTW TRIPLE CROWN FOR THE TOWN !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Expat, my late mother was always talking about Ross Gilbertson!! She was in her time a cheerleader way back then for the pirates!! A good friend to the family until his death was Dickie Howard who rode for Poole from 1948 - 1951. My father was a scout at the time of the very first meeting in 1948 and remembers Reg Craven getting killed in the very first race ever at the stadium.
The majority of speedway bikes run with 'Jawa' 'lay down engines from the Czech Republic, and also a few with 'GM' general motors engines. Very rare if not at all with jap 'upright' engines.

I am a fairly recent convert to Speedway - lucky enough that companies I work for (first RIAS and now Castle Cover) have sponsored the Speedway - so occasionally get free tickets and a great seat level with the start flag. I managed to get along to the Diamond celebration event which was great.
Jason Crump & Bjarne Pederson have been excellent riders - but Chris Holder looks like taking over as the new top man.

One of the most memorable meetings i've been too, was the 1981 World final at Wembley, which was the American Bruce Penhall's first world title.

Good old 'National' league! Seems that the Leagues set up for BMX with engines is very strange to me , is there pormotion or is it like rugby used to be? BMX with engines??? not sure about that one sir!! Nowt strange about the leagues squire if your into speedway... National league is for the youngsters and sometimes older riders to race in and is in fact very good, you should try it sometime? Premier and elite leagues are where the more experienced riders go to really let their clutches out!! Anyway like football it boils down to good old money and winning the various leagues etc...

expat - it was "Entry of the Gladiators". Well impressed by your role as shale sweeper!!! Steve47 - I was there when Malcolm Flood was killed. They had a trophy named after him for many years. Sterte - there is promotion between Premier and Elite Leagues (daft names I know!) but only via play- offs which usually means no promotion!

Are the Speedway team called the Pirates because they stole our stadium? Pity they haven't looked after it LOL....As far as I can see the Poole Speedway promotion have certainly looked after if not still looking after it. I don't suppose you remember the 'main stand' when the cold wind blew in the sides of the stand while watching the town? The sides have been covered in now thus improving the situation. The grandstand near the railway line is such an improvement on the 'old' stand that I would stand outside and watch the town. I would love to see the town back in the stadium but it's NOT going to happen but don't worry the stadium is being looked after and well used!!

Speedway have loked after the ground??? surely you mean the lease holders who rebuilt the Wesat Stand for the dog punters. As for the addition of "ends" for the grandstand I'm sure that part of the lease agreement was for the stand to be demolished and re-built not much chance of that!

Sorry it meant to read that the powers of be that 'run the speedway' ie Matt and Giles can only do so much as Stadiauk are actually the lease holders and primarily run the greyhounds but 'host' the speedway for good measure (Same at Swindon incidently) Not sure about what should have been done and hasn't all that I know is that the 'old' stand was going to be replaced sometime?!! So Fran what did you mean by them not looking after the stadium?

ive not gone regularly since the ledge loramski left Loramski the legend... I expect you read the earlier message regarding my wife and I having dinner with Loramski himself two weeks ago? an update is that he announced to us at his inaugaration into the Poole pirates 'hall of fame' that he will be staging his farewell at Poole in early 2011. A link to my Loramski model bikes if you haven't seen them? www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=115636&id=110471499492(Mine are from the second row) No rider will replace the legend that is Mark Loram for me but I am a big fan of Davey Watt....

Yes damn shame the Falcons are no more, seeing Mark ride around the county ground is another awesome memory to have. Incidently I have a dvd of Mark riding the county groundfor the Falcons in 1995/96 and is available from Re/run video's: www.rerunproductions.co.uk/archive_list.htmlDVD Code: ML9600 MARK LORAM – ’95-’96
