Thanks slepe. Looks like St Mary's died after Don Whithers and Stan Wallis gave up running it. Who did you play for

I am pretty sure they were playing up until a few years ago. After they moved from Whitecliff, I think they were playing sunday league football at Upton Rec. I played a few seasons for them and I remember it was a tight squeeze in the bath after a game at Whitecliff. I went to a centenary event at the old Hamworthy Rec club at Fleetsbridge some years ago as it was one of the oldest clubs in Dorset. I will try and make some enquiries though.

My father who still lives in Devon rd used to say about them playing at 'Linthorpe road' and they used The Shah of Persia as their changing rooms!

In the 50s they played in green and white, at Whitecliff and - as I recall - ran at least three teams and a youth side, were always in the top division of the Dorset League even after it became the Dorset Combination (I think that preceded the Dorset Prem).

I too used to play for longfleet in the early 70,s Lefty as I went to school there. I think Mr. Perkins name was Terry but he ran Longfleet Youth and they are different to Longfleet St. Marys. Longfleet youth still play and have numerous age groups playing in the Dorset and B'mth leagues

Terry Perkins used to run a youth team before he must have joined Longfleet. The team was called Heckford Park and we played in the Saturday Youth league. This was in the early 60's and most of the players were from Henry Harbin and I remember being well beaten 13 - 1 by Longfleet, who were then the best youth team around. Mind you we did lead 1 -0 for a very short time! Other teams I remeber were Parkstone Youth Club, Poole Sea Cadets, Lytchett, and a team somewhere near Verwood I believe. There were about 10 teams in the Under 16 (17?) league. Oh Happy Days!!

Hi all. I don't know if I can help but I'd like to try. What I can say is that Stan Wallis is still alive and still lives at the same place, sorry I'm not going to say where. I would be happy to visit him as I could take my mum there, she's Don's widow. Anyway another coincidence is that I live next door to someone involved with the current Longfleet and she is absolutely sure there is no connection between the two clubs. I find that odd because Longfleet St Mary's is an unusual name and hardly one a new young team would choose without the historical link. When I find out more I'll post again. Incidentally, after my father's death mum provided a cup for Dorset FA, we did not want it to be for an 'also-ran' 3rd place, minor league place so gave it to the winners of the Ladies League! Not sure Dad would have approved!

Thank you baldyjohn. Don Whither's son eh? It's a privilege to know you! And it's wonderful to know that Stan and your mum are still alive and kicking - well, maybe not kicking! If you get any more information please do post it here! Thank you again.

Quite correct baldyjohn. Green shirts, white shorts and green/white socks.
I remember the Fordingbridge Turks expat - why 'Turks' I wondered then and do now! The Football Echo was eagerly awaited outside the local paper shop at tea-time every Saturday and was full of fascinating facts and figures in the days before the internet and before many people even had TV! Those were the days eh?
Meanwhile, COYD

..they are still playing according to facebook. Oldest amateur football club in the world(1868). Named after the ferocious fighting s[pirit of Turkish troops in the mid 1800s. They beat AFC bransgore(!) 2-1 on Saturday. Ferocious fighting spirit...just what those Dolphins need on Saturday
TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN!!!

I was the goalkeeper for Longfleet St Mary`s youth team from 1945 to 1949 ,during that time I was also selected on 2 occasions with Tony Ellor our right back to play for Dorset. In 1949 I was called up for National Service.

The only names I can recall are Bobby Stokes (his dad was manager/coach for a long time), Darryl Clayton (tall centre half and a good lad) and Bobby Graham (forward). I can remember lots of faces and one or two nicknames but that's about all now.
