I know there are some interested in rail travel on this forum. A heads up tonight on old rail routes, pre-Beeching, on BBC1 South today. It's 40 years since the decision to shut down some of Britain's rail routes and on tonight's show they're looking at what old routes should be re-opened. I'll go for the old Basingstoke to Alton and Alton to Winchester lines. Whats's yours ?

Mine would have to be the old Southern Railways route which ran from Plymouth to Tavistock to Okehampton to Scum, oops Exeter. Or the Plym Valley Route which ran from Plymouth to Yelverton to Princetown, I grew up looking across the valley at it.

Re-open the Wimborne to Poole line would be great. Might be a bit tricky though. :-(

Wellsworld - Would they not all point at it with pitchforks and think they would suffocate at more than 40 mph? Sadly people where i grew up would probably nick the track and sleepers!

I would dearly of liked to see the S & D line still in operation. (Bath - Bournemouth) Just think of the traffic that would of taken off the road. Of course being realistic this will never happen. On a positive side the Swanage Branch is very close to connecting with the national network. Not saying too much however but 4-5 years time is a possibility! I have worked on the railway some 17 years now and in those years I have seen so much change not neccasarily for the better, lets hope that if the Swanage Branch is 're-connected' that can be one of the positives.

When I came down to Poole by train the other week I noticed a disused bridge/viaduct in the branksome area. Was that an old line ?

m3, am getting more than a little concerned now........ :-) ;D I've got a mate, Palace fan, who's well into trains and railways, his father was once a train driver. So he'll be interested in such info. Me, I'm into history and things like old battle gounds, old canal and train routes. Looks like things could turn full circle if certain fuels run out. Anyway did I tell you about one of the major battles of England back in 871 ....... ;D

m3, my old school use to take us up on december 6th(i think) every year to Freedom Fields in Plymouth for a ceremony to mark the Battle of Freedom Fields, where after a two year siege the Parliamentarians of Plymouth defeated the Royalists :-) If you visit Plymouth you'll notice that the guns of the Citadel originally faced the City, as it was built by Charles 2, and he didn't trust the people!!If you are into Battles etc, Shrewsbury is really interesting, what with the civil war, wars against the Welsh etc

Slepe, i think it was one of the battles in the War of the Kofte Kebab, where the taxi drivers of north Hampshire battled through traffic on the M3 and A31 in time to get sustenance before watching the Dolphins ;D

Guys this Kofte Kebab............is it with salad? It's spicey sausage meat on a skewer, grilled and not greasy. It's then served on bread with salad, chilli sauce, and salad cream. It beats the greasy elephant's foot stuff IMO. Made me hungry now

Post by sterteroad on Oct 31, 2008 12:56:56 GMT
An oggie is the proper name for a pasty. Or if your a real local a "tiddy oggie". made with chuck steak, potato and swede. Max Boyce nicked the word.

Sounds good. So you should never go into a pasty shop in the West Country shouting Oggie, oggie, oggie.

No, because they'll ask if you want three medium or large ones and something for yourcheek!! Well that's what they said to me in Ivor Dewdneys (Plymouth Pasty Heaven)
