I remember this game well-the Sheffield Utd Manager was the old Sunderland player Ian Porterfield who scored the goal when they beat Leeds in the 73 cup final
the Poole goal was scored from the penalty spot by Brian Chambers ex Arsenal Luton and AFC player-we signed him from Halifax I recall.I remember manager Roger Bazeley and I meeting Brian and his wife in a hotel bar to discuss terms-we gave them a weeks holiday in Majorca as a signing on fee!
the Poole side as near as dammit would have been
Martyn Jones Stuart Yeats Dick Maxted Bill Beaney Kevin Allen Mark Baber Brian Chambers Brian Benjafield Derek Courtney Ted Macdougall--yes the Ted Macdougall !! Barrie Thomas
subs Phil Matthews Peter Morrell Paddy Tighe John Evanson--ex fulham -played in same midfield as George Best and Rodney Marsh Martin Stormont Charlie Miles
I don't think I'm far out with that list
what great memories this brings back-that was a terrific team with some great characters
Happy Days!!

I remember that game as simply the wettest match I've ever witnessed. If United had not been desperate for a game, having not played for 3 weeks due to postponements, I'm sure it would have been called off.
I think I have a programme or it might even be just a team sheet in the loft.

The 81/82 season was one of my best seasons for supporting The Blades, I went everywhere but for some reason I just cant remember this game. I was one of the many Beer monster Blades tho so maybe I went, maybe I didnt ??

I think i remember this too, there were a few big pre season friendlies around this time, but i remember a gang of young lads going on the pitch at half time and kicking a ball around, some stewards tried to chase them off and everyone was falling around as it was so wet and muddy, has stuck in my mind for years it was hilarious, might not of been this game but was around this time and against a top team.

I remember that incident too but wasn't at the Blades match. I did go to see PTFC v Man U and Man C, which was either 81 or maybe 80 so it'll have been one of those two games, I think. Seem to remember a very young Norman Whiteside played in the United game, may even have bagged a hat-trick as he was up front.
